What a game. After a good start by both sides that little bit of luck dropped to the Hill.
Andre gave the most almighty kick upfield it bounced over the advancing defender, Budge ran through into the box and headed over the advancing keeper. A noisy crowd went very quiet.
There were some tired legs from the casuals game and a couple of players looked below par.
The rest of the first half was a good solid performance by the team, Tooting were kept out and we looked good.
Tooting came out for the second half like the proverbial train, they were all over us, they ditched the ball on the ground and decided to go for the high ball into the box, they never quite got on the end of anything. About 15 minutes from the end Ashley got ball with just one defender in front of him he looked up and decided to go for goal, got round the defender run forward and cracked a good shot passed the keeper an excellent result.
Upfront it looks like Budge and Ashley are getting an understanding with them getting closer to each other. They both had shots and did good work closing down and putting pressure on the defenders. One goal each was the result of good work.
Midfield looked to be struggling in the second half but kept going enough to keep out the talented and determined opposition. Poor lad Joe Bye was a shell of the nimble player from Tuesday but still managed to put in a reasonable performance, Owen Hill still gives the ball away too easily but shows good potential, Watts looks out of place this far forward but is a willing runner. In the last couple of games my biggest disappointment has been one of my favorite players, Gricey has not yet got control of the mid-field like we saw when he was here on loan last year. Think that in two good games Gricey has not yet shown his full potential how good will we be when he does.
In defence Tuck looked good in the first half and made it most of the way through before he faded, Tom had a good game and was instrumental in breaking up several attacks, Fogden and Inshelwood did enough but both have'nt yet proved there worth but give them time.
Andre made his height work as he was quick to collect or punch the many high balls that came near him, he came out quicker and with more confidence than in the last couple of games.
Matten came on for Inshelwood and looked sharp made some important tackles in the box and looked a more mature player slotting in well in the right back position.
Luke came on for the diminutive Bye and ran around making life difficult for the defenders and put in some good passes which helped to keep some players back in defence when they all wanted to go forward.
Joyce came on for Budge and again showed he is quick, he looks to be a big and lively lad. Like to see him have a couple of games to see how he gets on, but now that Ashley and Budge have started to connect who do you leave out. Joyce did come on in defence in the first game and did not look out of place so he should at least get a start in every game.
Lets not understate what happened today, Toot and Mitch are a big club and will be near the top of the league like the previous copuple of years.
Good solid game, good team work and we showed real grit to keep a clean sheet which will be important this year as we come up against stiff competition week after week this year.
