The Nomad-Online Select squad recovered from an early setback to win its first ever match in some style, to claim the Nomad-Online Invitation Charity Cup against their opponents from Worthing.
Few of the Nomad squad had met before the match, let alone played together, and that unfamiliarity was punished as early as the second minute when Chris Martin fired the Rebels into the lead past player-manager Dean Bradford, in the Nomad goal.
The lead did not last long however, as the Nomad side began to play some attractive football, and drew level on 8 minutes with a flick from the edge of the six yard box by Simon Whitney. Two minutes later captain Ryan Walton latched on to a delightful through-ball from Paul Sargeant and kept his composure to slot past Richard Shaw.
With 15 minutes played the struggling Bradford was replaced by late arrival Craig Ottley, with Dan Gander taking over in goal. The presence of Ottley gave the Nomad side added impetus, and on 18 minutes a good left foot effort by Walton wasn’t far away. Worthing went close on 22 minutes through Alex Chidwick, following a good pull-back by Michael Salt.
Ricki Mitchell had the ball in the Worthing net on 27 minutes, only to be flagged offside; but two minutes later the Nomadians extended their advantage with a well-taken goal by Walton after fine work from Mitchell. Walton completed his hat-trick on 35 minutes, coolly ‘rounding Shaw after a good through ball by Ottley, who went close from distance himself soon afterwards. As the half drew to a close, a great volley from James Comer was saved by Shaw and pushed up against the crossbar.
After a relatively quiet opening twenty minutes, the second half came to life with a deluge of goals. Mitchell volleyed home on 69 minutes; with Ottley blasting the ball into the Rebels’ net on 77 minutes to make it 6-1 after good work and a pull-back by Whitney. Worthing almost produced an immediate response through Martin, but on 80 minutes Whitney headed home unchallenged at the far post, and completed his hat-trick from an acute angle three minutes later.
On 86 minutes Peter Garnham was felled in the penalty area and picked himself up to send Gareth Davies the wrong way with the resulting spot kick for a Worthing consolation. But there was still time for Mitchell to complete the scoring from close range in stoppage time for an emphatic 9-2 victory.
Rolling substitutions were made by both sides throughout the match, and all members of the Nomad squad played their part in a memorable win … not least Forum designer Geoff Anscombe and Nomad-Online founder David Bauckham in the ‘home’ dugout, who presented the trophy to proud skipper Ryan Walton who, despite the absence of an armband, led his side with distinction.
A big word of thanks should also be made to Nick Cortnadge and his Worthing side for being such sporting opponents; and for Wick FC for allowing the match to be staged at Crabtree Park.
Finally to referee Dave Ball, who was ably assisted by Ian Bales (‘Hopper’) and Andrew Raeburn, for giving up their time and giving the whole thing a sembalnce of ligitimacy.
