As Gary left the pitch after the match I shouted at him that this has set the standard for the rest of the season.
If you missed the game you missed a classic.
Foster, Hill, Clark, Joyce, Piper, Turner, Pitcher, Cotton, Watts, Grice and Jarvis. Fogden came on for Pitcher who had pulled a muscle, Bye on for Hill who was not having a good time.
In the first half a neutral would have looked at the game and put us as the league leaders, we were first to the ball, playing some great one touch passing and closing them down early.
second half we let them in a bit easily but recovered towards the end when they resorted to kick and rush and long ball tactics.
The first goal summed up the game. Cotton tackled a very large player came away with the ball and put ina short pass to Pitcher, Pitcher put in a dream pass just in front of jarvis who slipped in an excellent diagonal pass into the path of Turner who placed it in the back of the net. Football at last.
We did get a penalty when in front of the ref one of their players raised his arm to stop the ball, grice cracked in the penalty.
They started to turn on the skill and a solo run by their 11 started from wide left passed an off form Hill, he ran across the defence turned about level with the right goal post and cracked in a superb cross goal shot.
I cant remember who put in our third (apologies) then they got the most dubious penalty decision ever. In front of the ref Joyce was supposed to have handled, the ref never gave it, not one of their players claimed it but a few of their supporters on the other side of the goal shouted. And of course the lino saw it from 40 yards looking at Joyces back he saw the handball. The penalty gave them their second.
We were then pushed back but they only had a couple of chances, loads of skyed balls and half hit shots which Foster closed down. One cracking shot was palmed out by Andre who looks to be growing in confidence again.
In defence Clark, Joyce and Piper did really well. They kept out the leagues top scorer and made him look ordinary.
In midfield LLoyd Cotton and Wattsy were really solid not getting drawn into the games they were playing to wind us up (there should be no need if your that good), these two for most of the match worked hard and really gave us the bite we need. Pitcher, for the 30 minutes he was on, showed his class, he is out of condition and carrying a bit of weight, but a run in the team will sort this out. Lovely ball player, able to hold it and lay it off.
Turner had a good first half but struggled in the second.
Upfront Ashley and Shaun kept the pressure on them and worked hard against a tight defence.
Bye came on for the struggling Hill and deserved his first yellow for a cynical tackle on a winger who was getting away from him, the silly thing was Lloyd had the player covered. This card was within 5 minutes of coming on, 10 minutes later he was sent off by the ref for a second offence, no one but the ref knows what the offence was. Even the cloth caps were amazed by the decision.
Fogden came on as sub early in the second half and played in midfield, I can't remember seeing him in the role before but he was good because he can tackle, head and can play the ball. Interesting to see if he retains this role in future matches. Fogden, Watts and Cotton would be my midfiled engine room with Mark P supporting the attack, leaving Pitcher to be creative wherever he wants to float.
Today was a real treat. Just playing seeing the passion and them working as a team with some good flashes of football in the first half would have been good enough, but to win against one of the leauges high flyers well what can I say but................
Come on you Yellooooooooooows.
