I have to get off my chest some of the things I thought went wrong last night. This isn't a pop at the team or management, if anyone from the club reads this, I am merely stating this a) to vent spleen and b) as a constructive criticism. I know how well the team can play, and that all of the players mentioned are good players.
Ok,
1) EVERY throw we took in the game was thrown towards Shaun Grice with the intention for him to head down or flick on for another player. This had about a 5% success rate, and after 2 or 3 throws they got wise to this and had at least 2 players marking Grice on every throw. A plan B was definately needed once this got predictable. Don't get me wrong, it's a good tactic, as Shaun is tall enough to be at least 50:50 to most headers, but we should've varied the tactic when it wasn't working.
2) Mark Pulling hoofed the ball high and long from nearly every clearance. Now Mark did some great defending in this game at times, but the passing was awful. Neil Watts told him to stop doing this but they just ended up arguing. Several times Mark even did this when he was in space. The worst occurance was when he hit a huge long ball to Dan Turner....how tall exactly is Dan Turner? Is he the best target for a long ball?
3) In the first half nearly every header from Clay Lamont went the wrong way. Clay made some vital challenges in the second half, but in the first half he managed to head a couple of simple clearances out for corners.
4) The right back position and the right winger/midfielder failed to cover any attacks from the left side despite the warnings their left sided attackers were giving us.
Apologies to have to vent spleen like this, I try to post an analysis of what went right when we win/play well so I feel justified here.
Not sure what happened to their player that got stretchered off. When he went down he was rolling around on the ground, something a player shouldn't do/can't usually do, if the injury is very serious, but obviously the stretcher indicated it was quite serious. One of their officials seemed to think it was a hamstring tear. What ever was wrong I wish the player a speedy recovery and I apologise for any silly comments I made about the number of injuries/treatments they seemed to have. Was just frustrated by the game!
